NBC ANNOUNCES SOME OF ITS EARLY DEVELOPMENT SLATE FOR 2010-11

Among Drama Series Pilots That Have Been Green-lit Are A Large Slate of Dramas Such as "Prime Suspect," "The Rockford Files," "Undercovers," "Chase," "Kindreds," "The Event" and "Love Bites"; Comedies Include the Untitled Adam Corolla Project.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - January 10, 2010 - NBC unveiled some of its early development projects that have been green-lit for 2010-11, including a large slate of dramas such as "Prime Suspect" (from Hank Steinberg, "Without A Trace"), an updated version of the classic "The Rockford Files" (from David Shore, "House"), "Undercovers" (from J.J. Abrams, "Lost"), "Chase" (from Jerry Bruckheimer, the "CSI" franchise), "Kindreds" (from David E. Kelley, "Boston Legal") and "The Event"; Comedies include the untitled Adam Corolla project.

The announcements were made today by Angela Bromstad, President, Primetime Entertainment, NBC and Universal Media Studios.

* On the drama side, "Prime Suspect" is based on the award-winning BBC series centering on a courageous female detective who investigates complex mysteries in a politically explosive big city. Casting will be announced later. The pilot is produced by Universal Media Studios and ITV. Hank Steinberg ("Without a Trace") and Erwin Stoff ("The Blind Side") are the executive producers.

* In "The Rockford Files," the successful NBC drama from the 1970s is re-imagined by executive producers David Shore ("House") and Steve Carell (NBC's "The Office"). The title character, Jim Rockford, remains a roguish private eye who tackles the dangerous, quirky and unpredictable cases that no other detective wants to handle. The pilot is from Universal Media Studios and Carousel Productions.

* "The Event" is a thriller with a unique storytelling device that features multiple points of view concerning a decent, regular fellow who battles against mysterious circumstances that envelope a larger conspiracy. Universal Media Studios produces the pilot that includes Steve Stark ("Medium") as the executive producer; Nick Wauters ("The 4400") is the co-executive producer/writer. Casting will be announced later.

* In "Undercovers," a domesticated husband and wife return from years in retirement and are re-activated as CIA agents. As they work together for the first time on new cases, they discover new aspects from their past - even as they re-ignite their passion for each other. J.J. Abrams ("Lost," the 2009 feature film "Star Trek"), Bryan Burk ("Lost," "Star Trek") and Josh Reims ("Dirty Sexy Money") are the executive producers; Abrams and Reims are the writers. The pilot is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot Productions.

* "Chase" is a new action-procedural drama from Emmy Award-winning executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer (the "CSI" franchise, "The Amazing Race," "The Pirates of the Caribbean" feature films). "Chase," based on a real-life group and set in the American Southwest, follows a crucial fugitive apprehension team comprised of U.S. Marshals that tracks down the nation's most notorious criminals. Tension builds as the cat-and-mouse game of the ultimate search escalates in each episode. The series is from Warner Bros. Television and Jerry Bruckheimer Television. Joining Bruckheimer as executive producers are Jennifer Johnson ("Cold Case") and Jonathan Littman ("CSI," "Cold Case").

* "Kindreds," created by Emmy Award winner David E. Kelley ("Boston Legal," "The Practice," "L.A. Law"), follows a curmudgeonly ex-patent lawyer and his group of misfit associates as their lives come together to form an unconventional kind of law practice. The series is from Warner Bros. Television and David E. Kelley Productions. Kelley is the writer and executive producer.

* "Love Bites" is an hour-long romantic comedy produced by Universal Media Studios and Working Title Films. Writer Cindy Chupack ("Sex in the City," "Everybody Loves Raymond"), Timothy Bevan & Eric Fellner (both for "Love Actually," "Bridget Jones' Diary") and Shelley McCrory are the executive producers. Casting and producer credits will be announced later.

* Among the comedies is the Adam Carolla comedy project that features the humorous radio and TV personality Carolla ("The Man Show," "The Hammer") as a contractor who sets out to re-build his life following a divorce. The pilot is produced by Universal Media Studios and BermanBraun. The debate started when US President Barack Obama extended his hand to England's Queen Elizabeth and was further fueled when the First Lady was photographed touching the Queen on the back.Throughout the world the act of touching has cultural meaning. In Asia it is considered disrespectful to touch an older person on the head, back, or shoulders. Even if the intent is to show respect or to comfort the person the act of touching these areas conveys insult.

Touching a business card in many oriental cultures, especially Japan, is the same as touching the individual. Great care should be given to the business card by grasping the card with both hands, admiring it, and then placing it in your pocket closest to your heart. Also remember it is extremely rude to write on the business card, fold it, or to place it in your back pocket.General TouchingIn the Middle East it is rude to not hold the hand of a friend of the same gender while walking down the street. However it is rude, and could violate local law, to publically hold hands with a friend of the opposite gender. Publically touching in France is normal. It is normal to touch while greeting someone, if you agree with them, or to make a point. The touching is not violent of considered an invasion of personal space as it is expected.

In a study done by Jourard (1966) in Paris recorded an average of 110 touches by friends or parents in cafes as compared to 2 touches at coffee shops in Miami. Interestingly observers found that touching in Miami was more aggressive 37 percent of the time. Italy and Greece had high rates of touching while Australia, New Zealand, and England were more aligned with the Miami touch rates. Additional studies in later years found similar results.Mediterranean cultures are also very touching. Handshakes are not as common as a hug and cheek kiss among people of the same gender. This cultural norm typically is retained by Mediterranean travelers or immigrants.Shaking HandsShaking hands has some cultural implications:

In Russia and Poland shaking hands is okay provided it is not done in a doorway or over a threshold. It is considered to be unlucky for both people. Hand shaking should occur before one gets to the door or after they have already entered.In Europe it is considered impolite to shake hands while wearing gloves. Even on the coldest days it is expected the other person is important enough for you to remove your gloves. Fashion gloves worn by women are an exception as these gloves can remain on the woman's hands – however only if the gloves are designed specifically to be worn indoors.

In sub-Sahara Africa a handshake typically involves both hands. The right hands clasp while left hands are laid over the right hands during the shake.In most Western cultures, such as the United States it is rude for a man to shake extend his hand to a woman unless she first extends her hand. Although this cultural courtesy is dying it is still expected to be followed in the elite and those in the Builder Generation.Never attempt to shake the hand of a German man if he is with his wife unless you first shake her hand. It is disrespectful and belittling to the woman if you seek to first shake her husband's hand.

We model the consequences of parental control over choice of wives for sons, for parental incentives to educate daughters, when the marriage market exhibits competitive dowry payments and altruistic but paternalistic parents benefit from having married sons live with them. By choosing uneducated brides, some parents can prevent costly household partition. Paternalistic self-interest consequently generates low levels of female schooling in the steady state equilibrium. State payments to parents for educating daughters fail to raise female schooling levels. Policies (such as housing subsidies) that promote nuclear families, interventions against early marriages, and state support to couples who marry against parental wishes, are however all likely to improve female schooling. We offer evidence from India consistent with our theoretical analysis.

Rodin's The Kiss (1901-14)

Masterpieces from the Tate Collection, including Rodin’s The Kiss (1901-14), Degas’ Little Dancer Aged Fourteen (1880-1), Picasso’s Weeping Woman (1937) and Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych (1962), will come to Liverpool, some for the first time, as part of a major rehang of the Collection at Tate Liverpool sponsored by DLA Piper. The new displays, over three floors of the gallery, have been arranged to celebrate Liverpool European Capital of Culture 2008.

A key feature of the new displays will be a special focus on the work of two celebrated British artists: Bridget Riley and Stanley Spencer, including some of their best-known works.
Tate holds the national collection of modern and contemporary art; DLA Piper Series: The Twentieth Century offers visitors to Tate Liverpool the opportunity to see more of the Tate Collection than ever before. Presenting important historic, modern and contemporary works, the displays will explore the history of the past one hundred years of art in a radical new way, by offering a parallel history of abstract and figurative art. DLA Piper Series: The Twentieth Century will include a rich variety of approaches to representational and non-representational art, highlighting key moments and developments, as well as continuities through the 20th and into the 21st century. I think that's one of the reasons why Deep Throat was such a popular X-rated movie. Otherwise, I have no interest in watching explicit sex scenes in a film. Ahhh, but give me a sensual read.

New Readings in Female Anatomy included three book works on The Reading Table- two of which were collaboratively authored. The first- HYSTORIES, added to the voices in Hall's first film about hysterectomy, and the second A Female Handbook engaged 36 women Hall invited to complete a sentence for her. During all the exhibitions of NRFA, Hall left blank books on The Writing Table- inviting women to add their knowledge and experience so she could continue to "build a library" of female knowledge.

While contributions to these blank binders were significant, Hall initiated a series of writing workshops with girls and women hoping to "make authors" to contribute to the project. During installations or residencies in Vancouver, Montreal and Providence, RI, Hall worked with almost 200 women who contibuted their writing to the project following the workshops. While she is still transcribing some of this writing, the first suite of ten books on body image, are close to completion. They will be posted here as they are finished, and those in progress can be seen here.

National African American Parent Involvement

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) will be observed Monday, February 11, 2008. Parents will be taking their children to school/visiting theirchildren in school in support of this national endeavor to encourage parents to come together in a single setting to promote educational excellence for today’s youths. “Of all the civil rights for which the world has struggled and fought for five thousand years, the right to learn is undoubtedly the most fundamental.” (W.E.B.DuBois). This day is an excellentopportunity for improving home, school and community relations. Ann Arbor (MI) Public Schools principal, Joseph Dulin, founded NAAPID, a nonprofit 501(C) (3), volunteer, national initiative. He conceived the idea of a National African American Parent Involvement Day after accepting the challenge made of them at the Million Man March to return to their individual homes and do more to build, involve and increase their commitment to improving the quality of life in their community, particularly for African Americans. Without question, he credits parent involvement for much of the success that he has experienced as an educator. Further, research supports parental involvement as a viable means of enhancing children’s academic successes. Dulin believes that, “Every parent wants their child to have a better quality of life than they themselves have had. It is the American dream, and for many African Americans, this dream has not been realized as a result of their child’s failure in school. Education is the key to success and parents are educators’ greatest allies.”

While the focus of the day (during Black History month) is primarily focused on African Americans, the purpose and intent of NAAPID is not mutually exclusive. ALL parents are encouraged to participate. This national observation provides a vehicle to open up dialogue among teachers, parents and students that will lead to a more conducive learning environment for every student from kindergarten through college. School districts across the nation are requested to make a special effort to make this day “parent friendly”.

Events and activities for the day are at the discretion of the schools. Things to do can range from classroom visitations to luncheons/dinners to national speakers to weeklong celebrations. Some districts have even formed a coalition to work together to present “NAAPID @ Night” in order to further expand the school day and to allow parents an opportunity to be involved who are unable to attend during regular school hours.

We ask that public and parochial institutions of learning plan to participate in this win/win endeavor. NAAPID needs not only the academic community, but also the “village” as a whole.

I Love You

Just three little words

don't seem like enough

for someone whose smile

still brightens my day,

whose touch can make me forgetthe rest of the world.

They don't seem like enough

for someone who's always been there

to celebrate with me

when everything goes my way

and to hold my handwhen my whole world seems to fall apart.

But even though

can't express the depthof my feelings for you.

City Lights by CWhether it is late at night on the freeway or in the bustling street
Nothing beats the sight that my eyes happen to meet
Forever glimmering across the milky sky
Eyes pressed upon the window panes to see them as they go by
Greeting the tired trekker with welcome and embrace
Cast upon the city as if it were a radiant lace
So many there to comfort
Each twinkling in their elaborate concert
In glory, glistening with might
Valiantly shining through the perils of day and night
To always be there along your roadside
City lights ever there to be the travelers’ guide.

What prevents to fly, to soar the sky―
When there are beings on this earth masquerading as angels,
With wings that touch high?
How can we not glide, or float atop the winds―
When there are those special moments,
When the soul is uplifted beyond sins?
Why then, is there no stairway to the skies―

Although it's slight.
I know of things he has done
Which aren't quite right,
But I understand and still see him
